The Three Birds

The team behind the Three Birds – Bonnie, Lana and Erin – have been best friends for 15 years. Between them, they have nine beautiful children and in 2014 they walked away from their corporate careers in pursuit of a more fulfilling life. They wanted to spend more time with their families and when working, they wanted to do something they truly loved – renovating. Now up to house renovation number nine, they have changed their lives, their homes and those of their many followers and fans.

There is nothing quite like turning an ugly duckling into a swan – which is just what the indefatigable trio, known as the Three Birds, have done with this suburban cottage in Sydney’s Hills District.

Chosen because of its location and the fact that it really had no redeeming features, this home has undergone the transformation of a lifetime, including a whole new open-plan kitchen out the back, leading onto a new outdoor space.

Bonnie, Lana and Erin know that kitchens are what sell houses, so they wanted to make sure this new extension ticked all the boxes in terms of practicality and good looks.

ISLAND BENCH

A huge kitchen island bench is the centrepiece of the new space, its soft green shade the perfect hit of colour in an all-white interior. Topped off by a stunning 60mm thick Caesarstone benchtop in White Attica™, it combines classic styling with modern practicality.

“The kitchen was always going to be this mix of traditional elements and some modern elements,” says Bonnie. “We’ve got very traditional cabinetry; it’s got that beautiful detailing to it, which I love. Then we throw to a modern tap, traditional sink and then again the modern knobs. It’s worked beautifully within the space.”

SPLASHBACK

Bonnie says that White Attica was the perfect choice in this mix of classic and modern details. “It is beautiful!” she says. “It’s got the curve running on either side, which is just beautiful; the detailing is amazing. And then we have got it running up the splashback as well.”

“We believe the secret to creating a colourful kitchen that will stand the test of time is not to overdo it,” adds Lana. “We limited the bold green hue to the island only. And finding the perfect mix of modern and traditional elements is important with any kitchen you’ll want to love in years to come.”

The kitchen adjoins an informal sitting area, drenched in natural light and designed as a spot to enjoy a quiet cuppa or too. A huge angled window is a feature of the space, anchored by a timber bench seat. “The light that the window brings in is insane – I love it,” says Bonnie.
